Meat Boy is an Adobe Flash game developed by artist Edmund McMillen and programmer Jonathan McEntee of "Team Mic". It was initially released on Newgrounds on October 5, 2008, and released October 7th on Kongregate. It is the predecessor of Super Meat Boy and the first Meat Boy game created, but is not officially part of the Super Meat Boy series, being labeled as a "prototype" by the developers.

Gameplay[]

In this challenging platformer, the player controls Meat Boy, as he goes on a quest to save girlfriend Bandaid Girl from the evil antagonist Dr.Fetus, who had kidnapped her. The goal of each level is to make it to Bandaid Girl in one piece. Along the way the player can collect bonus band-aids to unlock secrets and earn badges. The player will unlock levels in sets of five, with three sets to unlock the next series of levels, giving the player the ability to skip levels they might find hard or don't like.

Meat Boy moves about in the trail of blood he leaves on everything he touches, bouncing off the walls to reach his goal, making him hard to control at high speeds. On contact with obstacles such as spikes, salt, and lava, Meat Boy will immediately die and respawn at the beginning of the level.

A great feature in Meat Boy is the easy-to-use custom level creator. Accessible from the main menu, the player can simply click and craft their stage and post on the internet. The player is given a custom level text code that they can copy and paste so friends can import the stages you create. A map pack containing the "best" player made maps was released in December 2008. The map pack is considered by players to be more difficult than the original game.

The game has a vertical aspect ratio, and all levels involve primarily vertical platforming.

Legacy[]

Despite Adobe Flash being discontinued as of January 2021, there are a few alternate ways to play Meat Boy in the modern day.

  1. The Basement Collection: A 2012 collection of Edmund McMillen's old flash games available on Steam. Both Meat Boy and its map-pack expansion are included.
  2. Flashpoint: An archival application containing thousands of Flash programs. Both Meat Boy and its map pack expansion are included as pre-installed "legacy games".
  3. Ruffle: A Flash emulator that lets you play both Meat Boy and its map pack expansion on any websites that still include said games, albeit with a few imperfections.

Secrets[]

  • B-girl - playable character, the Bandaid Girl who is the finishing point on each level.
  • C-Crasher - playable character, a character from the game Castle Crashers.
  • Dr.Fetus - playable character, the villain of the game.
  • Gish - playable character, from Edmund McMillen's game Gish.
  • Hot Coffee - Ending sequence. Kongregate received numerous complaints about the graphic nature of the ending and it was removed in the Kongregate version of the game. The developers of the game were displeased and replaced the ending with a message blaming those who had complained.
